Yes, you could send/save TTY messages with that. But first used it for computer programming. I also remember when high speed computer network backbones were 2400 baud.

I was a Data Systems Technician in the Navy. Back in the 1970/80s paper to was used to load various maintenance programs.
Paper tape was OK, but it tended to wear out. But you were sure to drop the box of punched cards. Especially if you neglected to add sort fields at the end of the cards.
