“Texas” Man Kills Five

So CBS would have us believe.

5 killed in Texas shooting, including 8-year-old child; manhunt underway for suspect
UPDATED ON: APRIL 29, 2023 / 1:01 PM / AP\A Texas man went next door with a rifle and began shooting his neighbors, killing an 8-year-old and four others inside the house, after the family asked him to stop firing rounds in his yard because they were trying to sleep, authorities said Saturday.

An unidentified Texas man, eh? How, because for hours, I’ve seen other outlets ID’g the alleged perp. Case in point:

Update: Mexican National Accused of Gunning Down Five People in Texas Identified – Police Say Suspect was Drunk</a
Apr. 29, 2023 12:05 pm
The good news is police have identified the man allegedly responsible for the deaths of the five people. His name is Francisco Oropeza, a 39-year-old Mexican national.

Oh. A Mexican national, not a Texas man after all. And according to OAN (at 7:48 AM), he’s using a Mexican consular card as ID.

Do nore the timestamps for those stories. CBS had to ignore things known to other outlets for hours, just to pretend it’s a “Texas man.”

Hint: Mexican consulates typically issue the matrícula consula to Mexican nationals who are in the US illegally, just so they’ve got some sort of ID.

The card is extremely popular for Mexicans in the United States without other ID. Lack of identification is one of many reasons why undocumented immigrants do not use banks. It’s a way for the Mexican government to keep track of its citizens for consular and tax purposes, collect data on them, and provide identification.

When the anti-gun types start screeching over this shooting and demanding more gun control, please point out the likelihood that the shooter was an illegal, and thus prohibited from lawfully possessing a firearm.

(g)It shall be unlawful for any person—
(5)who, being an alien—
(A)is illegally or unlawfully in the United States; or
to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce, or possess in or affecting commerce, any firearm or ammunition; or to receive any firearm or ammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

I Confess, That Never Happened To Me…

In the US, anyway.

Traffic Stops, Crowd Of 300 Gathers To Watch Herd Of 2,500 Sheep Cross Idaho Highway
Hundreds of people were stopped in their tracks Sunday to lay eyes on a herd of approximately 2,500 sheep cutting through an Idaho highway.

While roughly 300 standing spectators sought to see the sea of sheep voluntarily, a handful of drivers on the state highway were unwittingly subject to traffic backups along Idaho’s Highway 55, according to KTVB.

Leastways, sheep. Cattle and bison occasionally. Not sheep. Guess I was just never in Idaho at the right time of year.

But in Greece and Turkey, stopping for herds of sheep or goats was a pretty regular thing. No one sweated it; it just was.

Been There, Done That

As seen at Knuckledraggin.

Yep. At FairPoint, before they went under.

Facilities sent out a mass email saying they were going to replace bad flourescent tubes, and asking for locations that needed attention. The morons used all the NOC emails — hundreds — in the “TO:” field instead of BCC’g. As people replied, they all hit “reply all.” Then people hit reply all to them pointing out their own error, and telling about what tubes over their cube needed replacing.

Then idiots were asking how the tubes would be replaced, and all kinds of other stupid shit. And garned more reply alls. Then company network started bogging down.

At which point… I hit reply all (deliberately) and asked for folks to please remove my address before they send their next round of dumbass lightbulb queries and discussion. And said this was starting to sound like a bad “how many blondes does it take to change a lighbulb” joke.

Yep, that got me dragged into HR and “counseled.”

I have a suspicion who bitched, and yeah, she was a blonde. And one of the most useless “workers” in Broadband.

TZP Column: Belling The Cat

CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE
Twit “Ballin” has answered the question of who will volunteer to bell the confiscation cat; kick in doors and grab the guns.

He will. Just as soon as the Second Amendment is “banned.” This was a reply to Creepy Uncle Gropey’s Twitter announcement* that he’s running for pseudo-reelection.

“Unruly”

I saw this headline in the Faux Snooze feed.

Atlanta police shoots unruly man near Greyhound bus station

Just on the basis of that headline, I made a mental bet with myself.

First, that it would be an Associated Press report.

Yep.

Second, that AP’s idea of “unruly” would be a little different than yours or mine.

Officers approached the man and he pulled out a handgun and fired at them.

So… do you think I won my bet?

TZP Column: Bad News For The Rust “Armorer”

YET ANOTHER INTERESTING BALDWIN/RUST SHOOTING DEVELOPMENT
You may recall that I’ve been wondering how a live round ever made it onto the Rust set.
[…]
We may have a better idea of who that was, now. Armorer Gutierrez-Reed had tried suggesting the company that supplied blanks had mixed the live rounds in with the right stuff. The forensic examination of components strongly suggested otherwise. Then there was the report that she had retrieved the gun after the shooting, before the police arrived, and removed the spent case. That’s odd,and sounds rather like tampering with evidence.

[Update] My Work Is Done

I think I can kick back for the weekend, proudly knowing I’ve done about the best I could this week. And ended on a high note.

I hurt an LA Times reporter’s feelings. [proud smile]

This is in reference to her story claiming that Baldwin’s gun had been modified and wasn’t working properly. After reading Meg James report, I wrote up my own column. I emailed her and pointed out that her “unnamed sources'” claim seriously conflicts with the FBI’s forensic examination of the gun, and with the charging affidavit.

She said she read the forensic report, but couldn’t see where it said the FBI broke the gun themselves.

I pointed her to right page. And made reference to checking sources’ stories before publication. She didn’t care for that.

I am a nice person, I sent you a nice email and you replied with mean and nasty insults. That’s sad.

The mean and nasty insult? I’d said: Have you considered that this tendency to rush a story out before you’ve.. you know, actually checked facts, may be why I, and many others, have long considered the LA Times to be extremely unreliable?

She also whined that she only had 28 minutes to get that story out. So I replied:

And in less than 28 minutes, I read a report citing yours, tracked down your story, read it, dug up the forensic report, re-read it, and wrote my own column, complete with links to your story and the forensic report, with quotes.

Oh, and emailed you.

I could have been even meaner and pointed out that an “entertainment writer” probably shouldn’t be trying to write about technical aspects of firearms. I leave the entertainment industry alone, except where — as in the Baldwin shooting — it intersects with my own area of semi-expertise.

Show of comment-hands: Who amongst my readers generally considers the LA Times to be reliable?

Added, 4/22″ Heh. Purely by coincidence, Dail Caller weighs in on the LA Times.

EDITORIAL BOARD: Here’s Everything The LA Times Got Wrong In Their Hit Piece About Us (Pretty Much All Of It)
What happens when you combine wealthy business elites with axes to grind, a semi-retired reporter out of his depth and a major newspaper with low editorial standards? You have the perfect recipe for a factually-challenged hit piece against honest journalists.

I Don’t Think They Understand How Flash Mobs Work

I saw this headline and thought, “No; they can’t be that stupid.”

VIDEO: Chicago Group Hopes to Deter Teen Mobs with Amber Alert-Type System

Well, it’s Chicago. So yes, they are.

Everybody here probably has a phone in their pocket right now, so if you get a text right now, you are going to get the text and you are gonna say, “okay let me check, let me call my kids to make sure they are not there” and maybe even make sure if any of their friends might have been there but now they can call their friends and say, “hey such and such might be down here, you might want to check it out.” It’s trying to bring the community together to work together.

Yep. If When another flash riot kicks off, they want to send a notification to everyone who hadn’t gotten the word yet, so they’ll know to show up and Burn, Loot, Murder, too.

TZP Column: Baldwin Gun Modified?

Given the FBI’s testing of the murder manslaughter weapon, this claim seems awfully dubious. And unnamed sources again…

BALDWIN’S GUN WAS MODIFIED?
This claim comes via the not-so-reliable LA Times.

The replica of the vintage weapon — a Colt .45 revolver — had been modified , increasing the odds that the gun might have misfired, as Baldwin has said, according to the sources.

Methinks someone neglected to read the FBI forensic report on the testing of the gun. Here’s is the relevant portion (page 6).

TL;DR: They tried to force it to fire without pulling the trigger by pounding on the hammer with a mallet 1) with the hammer down, 2) at quarter cock, 3) at half cock, and 4) at full cock. The only detonation occurred in the full cock position…

…when they pounded the hammer so hard that the sear sheered.

TZP Column: But, But… It Wasn’t Supposed To Disarm US

GUN CONTROL SCHADENFREUDE
I don’t normally turn to Vice for news, but this is too good to skip.

The Washington state legislature passed an “assault weapons ban,” HB 1240. It seems to be fairly bog standard as these things go: cosmetic characteristics that they swear “are not “merely cosmetic”,” and doesn’t actually ban any existing firearm. Just future sales and transfers. But…

Ah, schadenfreude! Vice, for once, is freaking out over a gun control law, because the Washington lefties…
