Police Need To Ask That Doctor Some Questions

No doubt you’ve heard about the Highland Park parade shooting today. The last I heard, it’s up to 6 dead, 24 wounded. Suspect is described as a white male, 18-20 years old (so there will be some questions about how he had a firearm in Illinois), small build, long dark hair.

The police say they recovered a rifle, but did not say what type. Which makes this doctor’s claim interesting.

One doctor reportedly said after the shooting, “I did CPR on a 9-year-old until the paramedics pushed me off. This was a mass casualty zone. I saw two people eviscerated by the AR-15.”

Is he making an unsupported assumption that an “AR-15” was used? Or does he have inside knowledge? If the latter, from the police…

…or the shooter?

Drumming up some extra business, doc?

Frankly, given that this was Illinois, a reportedly very liberal town,  and the current push for “assault weapon” bans; the fact that the police didn’t immediately identify the rifle as either an “AR-15” or “AK-47,” I rather suspect it was neither. We’ll see.

Added: Police still won’t say what the rifle was.

(Update: At a second police briefing around 2 p.m. CDT, Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the weapon used was a “high powered rifle”, but would not further describe the weapon.)

I Swear – This Is Not The Babylon Bee

Newsom cuts ad encouraging Floridians to move to California
“It’s Independence Day — so let’s talk about what’s going on in America,” Newsom says in the ad, which he tweeted out on Sunday. “Freedom is under attack in your state,” he adds before taking aim at Republican leaders.

“I urge all of you living in Florida to join the fight — or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom: Freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and the freedom to love,” Newsom says. “Don’t let them take your freedom.”

Who knows? Maybe that’ll appeal to the damned northeast yankee transplants.

Idjits Needing Rescue

I keep seeing stories like this, and they still never cease to amaze me.

Pair of hikers from Texas — stranded with no rain gear, layers or provisions — rescued in Sangre de Cristo mountains
“These hikers were highly unprepared,” AVSAR said. “They had no extra clothing and no way to stay dry in their tent, with no rain fly. These hikers said they did not understand why it was so cold and rainy in Colorado, because it has been ‘so hot in Texas’ where they hike all the time.”

The hikers’ tent was inadequate for Colorado conditions, one of many errors AVSAR says could have resulted in their death had search and rescue not been able to reach them.

“They never checked any weather forecasts and did not have any extra food, water or layers for the intense hike in or the night to camp,” AVSAR posted. “This is an extreme example of how ignorance can kill people suddenly in these mountains.”

That story has a link to ten essentials to carry when hiking. Heck, I’ve got half or more of ’em on a daily basis, much less when hiking (which ain’t really happening anymore).

Shoot, several years ago I was camping with a group. As we were setting up camp, someone needed some item, and I casually pulled one out of a vest pocket. Something like that happened two or three more times; I think the last one was, “Anybody got pliers?” and I held out my multitool.

A kid had been watching this and asked, “What all do you have in that vest?” in amazement.

“I don’t know. What do you need?”

He asked for something basic; may have been just a pocket knife, which of course I have. Then he asked for a candy bar.

I pulled out a chocolate chip granola bar and said, “Close enough?”

At that point he started yelling for his brother. “Come here! You half to see this. He has everything in his vest.”

“Yeah, right.” L— always was the cynical one.

“No, really. Just ask him for something. He’ll have it.”

L— scoffed, and gave it a shot. “Got any wire?”

I reached back to the vest map pocket, and pulled out a coil of coathanger wire. His jaw dropped.

That last was a fluke. While I routinely carried 550 cord, the wire was generally in my truck. By luck, just a few minutes earlier, someone wanted to hang a lantern and and I’d gotten the wire out of the truck, then stuck it my pocket when we were done.

So I don’t have a lot of patience and sympathy for idiots who can’t be bothered with life essential basics

“Just posting this for the memories.”

Alec “Six-Gun” Baldwin still thinks he won’t be charged for shooting two people, killing one of them.

Perhaps he’s correct. However, considering that what he has admitted to doing was clearly involuntary manslaughter under New Mexico law (and assault for the director’s wounding), it is quite possible he’ll effectively be found “not guilty due to liberal celebrity.”

If we ever hear the results of a proper investigation, others could face charges, and Baldwin’s charges could be up- or down-graded depending on circumstances. But — again — by his own admission he’s guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

You broke every safe firearm handling rule there is, Baldwin, and killed a woman. Perhaps others share some blame, but you cocked and pointed a loaded gun at her, and now she’s dead.

SCOTUS And “Remain In Mexico” Policy

I’ve seen some people expressing anger at the Supreme Court over their ruling on Biden ending the Trump-era “remain in Mexico” policy. While I wpuld prefer to see that policy continued, I didn’t much expect it… if SCOTUS did its job properly.

Mike Huckabee explained it quite succinctly.

So just to be clear, it wasn’t the Court’s decision but Biden’s decision to reverse the Trump order that will lead to disaster. The SCOTUS simply affirmed that as President, he has the Constitutional authority to make disastrous decisions. I just wish he’d quit doing it.

SCOTUS didn’t endorse Biden’s action; it just determined whether the constitutional authority was there.

Just as it made a similar determination in West Virgina v. EPA that the EPA lacked such authority. And Conservatives cheered that. Me, too.

Russia v. Ukraine: Master-Level Trolling

In response to the plans of the Russian Parliament to revoke Russia’s recognition of Lithuania’s Declaration of Independence from the USSR in 1991, the Kyiv City Council has cancelled the decree by Kyiv Rus Grand Prince Volodymyr of the founding of Moscow in 1147.

Moscow is gone

That’s funny.

I Recall More Profanity Than Prayer

I’m not a parent, but I have given a driving lesson to a teenaged girl.

Study Shows Teaching A Teen To Drive Best Way To Improve Prayer Life
This week, an international panel of scholars released the findings of a study examining a causal link between an improved prayer life and teaching a teen to drive. The results are conclusive: parents who report a “poor-moderate” prayer life increase their prayer by over 329% after the first behind-the-wheel lesson.

We’d gone to an empty parking lot for the lesson. And she found the one light pole. With my rear bumper. When she was supposed to be going forward.

I left further lessons to her father.

That’s a pretty safe claim to make, Caroline.

Another of those crazy “my body, my choice, your responsibility” types.

All the ways Americans are trying to avoid pregnancy in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson decision
“If we can’t safely go out and have sex and know that we will have a choice after that, then why should we be expected to?” Caroline Healey, a 22-year-old event coordinator, told the New York Post.

She said that men who do not get a vasectomy and are not protesting in the streets for easily-accessible abortions “do not deserve to have sex with me.”

Based on name, age, profession, and location, this appears to be Ms. Healey. I’d say she’s safe in claiming that she won’t have sex with the vast majority of men. And that was the case before Dobbs. I wouldn’t.

In an age when she has responsible options like the rhythm method, birth control pills, contraceptive implants, female condoms, IUDs, Plan B, and tubal ligation, she demands that her theoretical sex partner permanently sterilize himself.

That right there is another reason I wouldn’t touch her, even if I found the wrong LinkedIn account. She’s a whiny, irresponsible, mentally childish bitch; an adult only temporally.

And if she had a lick of sense, she might consider just what sort of guy she’d be getting; someone who would sterilize himself just to get a one night stand with a whiny, irresponsible, mentally childish bitch.

They’d deserve each other.
