TecGrip FormLok Holster: Not A BAD Concept, But…

I saw this over at The Firearm Blog: A generic holster moldable for a custom fit.

Blackhawk’s NEW TecGrip FormLok Moldable IWB Nylon Holster
This technology packed holster system begins with an outer layer of tacky material that clings to the body and fabric for secure all-day carry without the need for a belt clip. The next layer is a high-density closed-cell foam material that provides padding for lasting comfort.

The middle layer is where things get interesting, consisting of a material called Memory-Lok. This Memory-Lok material is a thermoformable plastic that allows the user to heat up and mold their holster around their handgun, offering passive retention.

With retention, comes added friction. This is where the interior layer of holster material comes into play. The interior liner of the holster is constructed of a friction resistant 600 denier polyester to promote long service life and reduce wear and tear.

It’s an interesting concept. As someone who’s bought a few handguns that never really got so popular that manufacturers specifically supported them, I can see the value. But I see a couple of probs, too.

First, the lack of a belt clip. This might be fine for taxi drivers sitting all day, or sedentary office workers. But I’m not going to trust nothing but the “tacky” surface. Or how long it stays tacky, as the surface picks up dirt and oil.

Secondly, 55 bucks seems a bit much. I think a better option for myself would be a cheap, generic leather holster from Sportsman’s Guide, and then wet-forming it for that same customer fit. Unload your handgun, wrap it in cling-wrap, and mold the leather around it. It ain’t that tough.*

* For more fun, try hot-molding leather that’s been soaked in melted wax. I once made a suit of armor that way, including gauntlets.
