House Dims Demand To Know Why Republican McCarthy Didn’t Do Their Opposition Research For Them

RE: Liar George Santos

House Democrats who made Ethics complaint against George Santos now demand Speaker McCarthy disclose what he knew about freshman GOP lawmaker’s ‘web of lies’ ahead of his 2022 midterm victory
A pair of House Democrats are calling on Speaker Kevin McCarthy to divulge what he knew and when about freshman GOP Rep. George Santos’ so-called ‘web of lies,’ as they phrased in a Sunday letter.

Roughly a couple of weeks before he was sworn into the 118th Congress, Santos admitted to fabricating details of his backstory including his career, education and family heritage.

Personally, I didn’t pay attention to the guy’s campaign claims because I’m not in New York, much less his disrict, and I had more important-to-me things to watch. When claims of falsehoods started coming out, I did think he was pretty young to have accumulated his alleged experience. I also figured he’d fit in just fine in DC.

The other thing I wondered is why in hell the Dims seemingly hadn’t done an iota of oppo research on the clown since “he was pretty young to have accumulated his alleged experience.”

So now they’re finger-pointing at a Republican rep from California who failed to do what they should have done themselves.

True, you’d think Reps would vet their own would-be candidates, but clearly — since they didn’t talk Santos out of running, or prep any damage control in advance — they didn’t.

TZP Column: Illinois Assault Weapon Ban

Puzzling definitions in the new IL ban: “assault rifles” and “assault weapons” that are rifles; both semiauto.

ILLINOIS ASSAULT WEAPON BAN ODDITIES
I had occasion to look over the definitions section of Illinois’ new assault weapon ban bill, and I noticed some odd stuff.

First, Illinois achieved a first-in-the-world prize: semiautomatic “assault rifles.”

Oopsie

A teacher at a Maryland high school inadvertently sent out sexually explicit photos to students. He emailed pics to every student. “Inadvertently.”

What got me was this line from the letter the principal sent to parents about the screwup.

Our Mental Health Clinician and Professional School Counselors are available to provide direct support as needed to any student.

Makes you wonder just what sort of pictures they were, that they would traumatize 21st century high school students to the point of needing mentaal health treatment. I’m guessing you’d be hard pressed to find an American high school student who hasn’t been looking at porn already.

And that school wasn’t so concerned about students’ mental health when a 14yo girl was sexually assaulted by 6 guys.

My sister wonders how that porn differs from the porn schools are stocking in classrooms and libraries these days.

TZP Column: Pistol Brace Final Rule

I had to rush this to get it published before sundown. A bit of a trick with 293 pages of bureaucratic BS to wade through.

The ATF managed to make their rule even more arbitrary, capricious, and incoherent than their original proposed rule.

PISTOL BRACE FINAL RULE: 293 PAGES OF ARBITRARY CAPRICIOUSNESS
The ATF’s final rule on whether pistol braces magically turn pistols into short-barreled rifles was signed on January 13, 2023.

Most of the document is rationalization of why they believe they can get away with this, and explaining away NPRM commenters’ objections. They did agree that the proposed form 4999 — which used an arbitrary point system to differentiate between pistols and short-barrel rifles — was flawed. They decided that was sufficiently flawed that they abandoned it.

Dallas Zoo: Code Blue For The Escaped “Non-Dangerous” Leopard

Seems the Dallas Zoo misplaced a clouded leopard, which they describe as “non-dangerous.” True, it’s not what you generally think of as a leopard; different species.

We have an ongoing situation at the Zoo right now with a Code Blue – that is a non-dangerous animal that is out of its habitat. One of our clouded leopards was not in its habitat when the team arrived this morning and is unaccounted for at this time.

It’s just a fifty pound, three and half foot long (body, excluding tail), solitary carnivore.

Nothing to worry about.

Kidding aside, from brief reading, during daylight hours it’s probably harmless enough; just holed up somewhere, hiding.

All bets are off once the sun goes down, though.

TZP Column: I Told You So

Allow me to gloat a bit.

TOLDJA SO: CARGILL V. GARLAND AT FIFTH CIRCUIT
I’m human. When I’m right, I like to brag as much as anyone else. And sometimes that means going full-blown “I told you so.”

The Fifth Circuit ruling in Cargill v. Garland is one of those times. The Fifth overturned the lower court which had found that the ATF’s bump stock (bump stock type device) ban-through-redefining-them-as-machineguns was lawful.

How right was I? This right.

TZP Column: Illinois Assault Weapon Ban

Malicious compliance comes to mind, as does the questionable wisdom of door-kicking because the occupants are well armed.

ILLINOIS ASSAULT WEAPON BAN
Illinois now has an “assault weapon” ban, complete with registration for “grandfathered” firearms.

Wiser sheriffs says they will not enforce the blatantly unconstitutional law. I would guess they are the ones aware of the SCOTUS decision in BRUEN. Or possibly they recall an observation I made in the 1990s, when California was prepping its own outright ban…
