Federal officials pause plan to rename Georgia’s Lake Lanier
Federal officials are pausing a plan that could lead to new names for Georgia’s Lake Lanier and Buford Dam after locals objected to changing the monikers of landmarks now named for Confederate soldiers.

Lake Lanier is named for a poet that wrote a poem about the Chattahoochee River that feeds the reservoir. Sidney Lanier’s crime was being a private in the Confederate Army long before he became a noted poet.

Buford Dam is named for the nearby town of Buford. The town is named after the then president of the railroad who built the town, post Civil War. Sadly for the to-be-erased history, Buford had served in the Virginia militia.

If the names are going to be changed, I propose:

“Lake The Corps Of Engineers Are Fucking Idiots”

“The Corps Of Engineers Are Fucking Idiots Dam”

So says CBS anyway.

The Justice Department has secured a nearly unblemished record in Capitol riot trials over the first two years of prosecutions.

Only if the “record” is the propaganda reported — and facts left unreported — by lamestream media like CBS.

Folks stupidly relying on CBS et al would miss the occasional “blemish,” such as witness tamering, destruction of evidence, tampering with evidence, Brady violations, and perjury. Or incredibly stupid shit like confusing pornographic memes with Capitol photos in court filings.

Then there’s the tainted jury pool, and the refusal to allow any change of venue due to that taint.

The jury pool is so bad that defendants are settling for bench trials rather than face jurors seated after they said how much they hate Trump supporters. At least CBS briefly noticed that.

Throw in a little judicial bias and misconduct, too. Which makes bench trials no better than facing bad juries.

I wonder what CBS would consider blemished prosecution.

Really, Lopez-Obrador?

Mexico’s President López Obrador Actually Said Mexico is ‘SAFER’ Than The United States
On Monday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador actually said out loud during a press conference that Mexico is safer than the United States.

Don’t spit out your drink.

Let’s compare murder rates per 100K:

United States: 4.96
Mexico: 29.07 per

Mexico’s murder rate is almost 6 times (5.8609) higher than the US.

Maybe he meant overall crime rates:

United States: 47.81
Mexico: 54.19

Not seeing it, dude. But then, Lopez-Obrador thinks no fentanyl is coming from Mexico either (his own officials disagree).

Say, maybe we should take him at his word about the safety of Mexico…

…and refuse asylum for every Mexican national illegal claiming “sanctuary” from the cartel-driven violence there.

This Is When I Started Worrying

The SVB failure Friday was disturbing. I expected more cascading failures. I got it when Signature Bank failed immediately (that’ll be fun, because I’ve heard that the bulk of its holdings is crypto currency).

But the real worry kicked in this morning when Xiden assured us everything is fine.

“Americans can rest assured that our banking system is safe. Your deposits are safe,” Biden said from the Roosevelt Room. “Let me also assure you we will not stop at this. We will do whatever is needed on top of all this.”

Yeah, and he’s from the government and here to help. When government tells me all’s well, all ain’t.

Seems Wall Street agrees with me.

Yep, the order a stop trade on scores of big bank stocks. Because everyone was rushing to dump ’em while they could still get something out of ’em.

But all’s well…

…and it’s all Trumps fault.

“In my administration … no one is above the law,” Biden said, before calling on Congress to restore banking regulations rolled back during the Trump administration.

All’s well, but let’s start shifting the blame.

I figure this will go as usual: big failures, feds bail out the big losers by printing Monopoly money by the supertanker-load, inflation kills everyone who doesn’t get the first batch of “free” cash (i.e. – the rest of us).

New Superconductivity Claim

This has been getting a lot of chatter for the past couple of days; room temperature superconductivity. Here’s a glowing report.

Scientists discover superconducting material that could bring total revolution in energy and electronics
Researchers say they have created a superconducting material that works at both a temperature and a pressure low enough to actually use it in practical situations.

Others are more dubious of the claim. Dias claimed an earlier breakthrough — cold, but noncryogenic superconductivity — that was lacking in critical details, and which no one else was able to replicate; think cold fusion. That paper got retracted. Apparently some folks even muttered “fraud,” but without personal knowledge, I’d be willing to blame wishful thinking/confirmation bias.

If this is real, it’s big deal. In terms of superconductor theory. But not for practical applications.

To make a tiny speck of this material required pressure of 2 gigapascals — nearly 20,000 times atmospheric pressure — in a diamond vise, and holding it there, while baking it at 200 degrees Celsius, for three days. That manufacturing process is not going to lead to a superconducting power grid. It would hard pressed (no pun intended) to supply material for a computer chip; and such a one-off (no mass production) chip would cost millions.

No new gaming console for you.

If real, with this method, this is barely more than science fiction. But I’ll wait to see if anyone else can replicate it.

I’m more than twice Jason Wilhelm‘s age. But I’d match my knowledge of “tech, AI, social networks, data” against his any day. Granted, I’m weak on the subtleties of crypto (assuming he means cryptology and not crypto currency), because the real math is beyond me.

If he meant crypto currency, I learned enough about it that I may have been one of the few people not at all surprised to learn that the feds were tracing Bitcoin transactions (and doing it the way I predicted).

By the time he was born, I was already doing data transport: RF, lightwave (linear and SONET), FDM and TDM multiplexing, frame relay, and ATM. POTS and ISDN. Routers. I’ve worked every layer of the OSI model. Before his birth, I built at least two web sites from scratch. I was teaching programming nearly twenty years before he was born. Repairing computers, radios, and televisions. I was even an electrician in the ’80s.

Since his birth, I’ve tacked on telephone switches and Internet backbone routers, aDSL, SLCs, and assorted PON Internet access systems. Lessee… digital graphic design, Internet forum setup, Blogger and WordPress (that includes creating my own themes, not using the canned ones).

That’s a partial list. Let’s see yours, Jason.

A reverse Flynn effect was found for composite ability scores with large US adult sample from 2006 to 2018 and 2011 to 2018.

Domain scores of matrix reasoning, letter and number series, verbal reasoning showed evidence of declining scores.

The steepest slopes occurred for ages 18–22 and lower levels of education.

The “Flynn Effect” is a trend for increasing IQ scores over time; around 3-5 points per decade. Basically, the next generation kept getting smarter.

Until now. All those arguments you’ve had with younger people who can’t quite grasp logic and reasoning? That wasn’t your imagination.

A restaurant in the famous San Francisco Chinatown was visited this morning by the SFPD and federal agents, after an investigation showed the owners regularly killed dogs they found in the neighborhood and served them to customers.
